Volunteers Kimothy Mclaurin, Anthony Boomer, Margaret Canady and Casandra Boomer share a moment a levity at the Brinson Elementary School shelter in New Bern, N.C. The shelter housed more than 100 people during the peak of Hurricane Irene. The school is not expected to open for a few weeks due to severe water damage the manager said. Clean up crews will have to begin repairs once the structural repairs have been made and the power has been restored. Volunteers acknowledged that while there may still be a need, it would be difficult to keep the shelter open to families next week.
